Richard Perkins' photography could almost look like they came off found rolls from the basement of someone truly deranged. If you look closely, and with discernment, you can tell we're dealing with an artist with a real eye for capturing that eternal "blink and you'll miss it" moment just before you get your lights clocked out. Perkins' environment is violent and surging electric with youthful abandon. His subjects that roam wild in his images spew their blood and guts all over the camera. Its an environment of misfits in a misfit dance of some satanic cabal....a celebration in a land with out country and certainly without god. With Perkins' photography we're dealing with a mystic rape of all our natural senses...the kind of savage assault that leaves you oh so wishing for that break of morning light so you can figure out just exactly where your bleeding.
What was the first image you ever took? The first image I ever took was probably with a Polaroid in the mid 90's, it was a blurry fuckin' portrait of my own face when I was like 7 or 8...I gave it to my mom and she put it on the refrigerator and it is still there for when she is sad.
What are some of your inspirations? Inspirations consist of dirty, filthy 90's photography, people like Harmony Korine and early independent magazines that blew up like roman candles. The raw feel of the disposable camera....the simple click of the plastic button and the illuminating outcome.
Whats with all the Satanism? Ahhhhh Satan..... everyone has made a deal with him. Everyone makes him out to be a big deal. I love the darkness which surrounds the stars and the shapes that carve into the cornfield....evil is everywhere and everywhere is evil.
"....evil is everywhere and everywhere is evil."
How would you describe your photographs, in one sentence? One Sentence? Uhhhhhhh....Everything The Light Touches Is My Kingdom.
Whats Next? Probably some big shows... my last show "Defence Against The Dark Arts" was a hit here in the VA [Virginia]. It was at The Contemporary Arts Museum...so I'm probably gonna do another one there. I'm Trying to push Parachute Full of Forks to the masses, Im trying to take down the 18 year old fucks with the 3000 dollar cameras, the ones who don't know what they are doing, the ones who have cheesy names and their only work is on Facebook. The next step is a big one I'm ready to take, whatever you throw at me I will take down.
